EARTH'S NIGHT HALF

Here we see Earth's "Night Half", its center-point being exactly opposite Earth's Sub-Solar Point. This means that, if Earth were not in the way in this view, you would be looking straight at the Sun! Because the center-point of of Earth's Night Half (or shadowed half) is directly opposite the Sun relative to Earth, it is occasionally called the "Point of Local Midnight" or just "Local Midnight". Like Earth's Sub-Solar Point, Local Midnight is always changing, circling the globe to the west once a day. In addition, once each year it gradually migrates north and then south over the equator, its yearly northernmost and southernmost limits respectively defining the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
